The Gift of Experience

As parents (and grandparents, aunts, uncles) begin to search for the perfect holiday gift! A growing trend is the experience gift where someone gets to try a new activity or sport! This can be a great gift for families and one that the person will remember for many years to come!

Here’s a few tips for buying those gifts of experience.

  1. Are there additional expenses involved beyond the gift? For example, if you are purchasing dance classes for a child often the new dancer also needs shoes, tights or a costume.
  2. Be sure to check the length of the commitment.  Are you willing to pay for one month of classes, two months? If the class continues for 5 months are there penalties for leaving the program early? What if the child wants to continue the class? Are the parents willing to continue?
  3. Are the parents or guardians willing to drive the child weekly to class? You may be willing to pay but dad or mom is going to be adding an activity and responsibility to their schedule. Are they on-board?
